LOS ANGELES, OR L.A. AS WE KNOW IT

Los Angeles, often referred to simplay as L.A., is a city in California and the county seat of the same name in California. With over four million inhabitants, it is the largest city in California and the western United States and is the second-most populous in the country after New York.

Founded by the Spaniards as El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina Virgen de los Ángeles del Río de la Porciúncula de Asís, that is to say "The village of Our Lady the Virgin Queen of the Angels of the Porziuncula river of Assisi", it rose to the status of city on June 9, 1850, five months before California became the 30th state in the Union.

As an economic and scientific center of international importance, it is also the world's film industry capital, with Hollywood being one of the most famous suburbs of the city. In and around Los Angeles reside numerous celebrities - both American and international - from the cinema and entertainment industries.

THE ATTRACTIONS

What L.A. certainly does not lack are attractions. The best known are, in addition to the long beaches of the Pacific, the Hollywood district, the shops of Rodeo Drive, the shopping center "The Grove", the villas of show stars in Beverly Hills, Bel Air and Malibu and the Disneyland theme parks, located in the city of Anaheim in neighbouring Orange County, Universal Studios and Paramount.

Probably the most original way to be a tourist in Los Angeles is to recognise the locations of all the most famous American films and TV series scattered throughout the city, without forgetting the famous Grauman's Chinese Theater located along the famous Hollywood Walk of Fame. Not to forget, then, the Venice Beach district, known not only for the shops overlooking the beach, but also for its cycle path and numerous street artists.

The amusement park located on the Santa Monica Pier is another of the city's most popular meeting points, as well as being one of the largest in the world on stilts.

In a nutshell: it's really hard to get bored in Los Angeles!

SPORT IN L.A.

If Los Angeles is not THE city of American sport par excellence, it is undoubtedly one of the most present centers in the US sports scene thanks to the many teams based in the city that play in the country's top professional leagues.
