In 2019, Juventus – in recognition of its responsibility and influence with regard to environmental action – embarked on an ambitious process designed to assess the club’s direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions.
By analysing these emissions – formally known as Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions – the club would be able to gain an understanding of its carbon footprint.
Those efforts came against the wider context of the fight against climate change, with Juventus the first Italian football club to join the UN's "Climate Neutral Now" project and the UNFCCC Sports for Climate Action Framework, in order to measure, reduce and offset its greenhouse gas emissions. Juventus is also one of the first clubs to sign up to the European Life TACKLE project, which is overseen by a research group from the Institute of Management and involves analysing and developing action designed to enhance the way professional football and sports events in general approach the environment.
This process has now been expanded to include a new objective designed to strengthen Juventus’ commitment to reducing the negative impacts of climate change and promoting positive behaviour and action away from the field of play.
The Institute of Management’s sustainability laboratory will assist Juventus in quantifying its Scope 3 emissions, which refer to team travel (for the first team and youth academy) and fan mobility for all home games.
This new focus will bring added depth to Juventus’ reporting activities, collecting as much data and information as possible to create a more accurate overview of the club’s direct and indirect impacts and help shape future strategies in the area.
